Rebels Sweep Utah State 3-0 Saturday Afternoon

University of Nevada, Las Vegas recently issued the following announcement.

UNLV dominates Aggies and improves home record to 6-2 on the season.

The UNLV volleyball team swept Utah State 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Cox Pavilion.

The 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 victory improved the Rebels' home record this season to 6-2.

Fifth-year senior Mariena Hayden led all players with 15 kills, hit a match-high .407, recorded four service aces and led UNLV (16-7, 7-5) with 13 digs. The Rebels were led in assists by senior Lauryn Burt with 19 and blocks by sophomore Jordyn Freeman with five.

UNLV outhit the Aggies .288 to .147 for the match and dominated in service aces 11-2.

Tatum Stall led Utah State (17-7, 9-3) in kills with nine, Beatriz Rodrigues led the team in assists with 15 and Abby Peterson had a match-high 14 digs.

The win earned UNLV a regular-season split with the Aggies as Utah State won in five sets earlier this month in Logan.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will remain home for a match Monday, November 1 at 6:30 p.m. against San Diego State, which will be Unity/Student/Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night.

NEWS & NOTES:

Dating back to 2019, UNLV has gone 45-10 in its last 55 matches. The Rebels have won 16 of 23 this season, and are in the midst of a 14-5 stretch over its last 19 matches. UNLV's only two non-conference losses this season were to ranked teams (No. 7 BYU and No. 12 Purdue).

Hayden is No. 1 all-time at UNLV in career service aces (320; 204 ahead of second place) and kills (1,797). She is No. 3 in career digs with 1,312.

UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw it win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

UNLV returned nine letterwinners from last season including All-American and MW Player of the Year Mariena Hayden, and All-MW First Team performer Kate Brennan.

Also returning to the squad were Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch (honorable mention All-MW), Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira. There are eight newcomers, which include six freshmen and a pair of international student-athletes.

UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.

For the first time in program history, the Rebels were predicted to finish atop the MW volleyball standings by the league's 11 head coaches as the preseason poll was released in August. Hayden was chosen as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
