Churchill County Commissioners will meet on April 17 to appoint a new sheriff following the death of Sheriff Richard Hickox. The meeting is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. in Chambers at 155 N. Taylor Street in Fallon and will also be live streamed.
The appointment will fill the remainder of Hickox’s term, which extends through the end of the 2026 calendar year. This step is necessary to ensure continuity in law enforcement leadership for Churchill County after the recent vacancy.
According to state law NRS 293.165, individuals interested in running for the nonpartisan office of sheriff at the general election can become candidates by filing a declaration of candidacy with the appropriate filing officer and paying the required fee between specific dates: after 8 a.m. on the third Monday in June and before 5 p.m. on the fourth Friday in July.
Those wishing to file as candidates should do so at the Churchill County Clerk/Treasurer’s office, located at Suite 110, 155 N. Taylor Street, during normal business hours.
The commissioners’ decision will determine who leads local law enforcement until voters have an opportunity to select a sheriff during upcoming elections.
